Fabens, Texas, is a small town located in southeastern El Paso County, 25 miles southeast of the city of El Paso. The Southern Pacific Railroad runs through the town, and the town’s namesake was George Fabens, an official with the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Around 1900, the first permanent settler took up residence in the area that is now Fabens. Eugenio Pérez owned a farm and opened a store, which later became the location for Fabens’ first post office. The first non-Hispanic residents of Fabens were Patrick and Johanna O’Donnell, natives of Ireland who arrived a year later.
The population of Fabens, which was around 100 by 1914, rose during subsequent years, due at least in part to the Mexican Revolution and wealthy investors who moved to the area during World War I. While the population later declined around the years of the Great Depression, it increased steadily each decade thereafter. Today, Fabens is home to approximately 7,815 residents, according to 2007 data.
Modern-day residents have access to all of the conveniences of nearby El Paso, which has a population of more than 500,000. Higher educational opportunities are available at the University of Texas at El Paso, with an enrollment of more than 11,000. Travelers have close access to air travel via El Paso International Airport. For those who choose to take up residence in Fabens, the American dream is affordable, as the median home price is $98,000, and the cost of living is below the national average.
Sun worshippers can enjoy Fabens’ average of 289 days of sunshine per year. The climate is dry with about 9 inches of rain per year.
